Euro Cylinders & Anti-Snap Locks
Lock snapping has become one of the most common methods burglars use to break into homes across North London, and properties along busy residential streets like Stroud Green Road and the terraced Victorian flats near Finsbury Park station are no exception. A standard euro cylinder — the barrel-shaped lock fitted in the majority of uPVC and composite doors — can be snapped in under a minute using nothing more than a pair of pliers, leaving the door wide open without triggering any obvious alarm. Upgrading to an anti-snap cylinder is not an optional extra; for many home insurers it is a condition of your policy.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my front door has a euro cylinder that could be snapped?
If your front door is uPVC or composite and uses a key that is thinner and flatter than a traditional Yale key — roughly the shape of a car ignition key but for your front door — it almost certainly uses a euro cylinder. You can confirm this by looking at the lock face on the edge of the door: a euro cylinder sits in an oval or oblong metal plate and the key barrel is visible from the outside. If that barrel protrudes more than a few millimetres beyond the face plate, the cylinder is in a vulnerable position. Call us on 020 7871 7826 and we can talk you through what to look for or arrange a visit to assess the door in person.
Is a TS007 3-star cylinder the same as a British Standard lock?
They are related but not the same thing. British Standard BS3621 applies to mortice deadlocks and sash locks — the type of lock found in timber doors that requires a key to lock from both sides. TS007 is a separate testing standard specifically for euro cylinders and their associated door furniture. Both standards are relevant to home security in the UK, and many insurers ask for BS3621 on the main lock and TS007 3-star on the euro cylinder if your door uses one. We can advise on both during a visit and carry out door lock replacement or upgrades to meet either standard where the door type allows.
Can a locksmith change a euro cylinder without damaging the door?
In the vast majority of cases, yes. Removing and replacing a euro cylinder involves undoing a single retaining screw on the edge of the door and sliding the cylinder out — no drilling, no cutting and no damage to the door or frame. The job is fully reversible. The only situation where damage becomes a risk is if the cylinder has already been partially snapped, corroded solid, or the retaining screw has been stripped. Even then, our technicians are experienced in extracting damaged cylinders with minimal impact on the door. We always aim for a damage-free result and will tell you honestly if there is any risk before we begin work.
My landlord has asked me to arrange a lock upgrade — is that something you can help with?
Yes. We work regularly with tenants, landlords and letting agents across Finsbury Park and the surrounding N4 and N7 postcode districts. If your landlord or managing agent has asked you to arrange the upgrade, we can liaise with them directly if needed to confirm the specification and agree a suitable time. We can provide a written description of the work carried out and the cylinder fitted, which the landlord may need for their insurance records. The important thing is that any change to the locks on a rented property is done with the landlord's knowledge — we always check this before proceeding on a tenanted property.
What determines the final price for a cylinder upgrade?
Several factors influence the final quote: the size and specification of the cylinder required for your door, whether any additional work is needed such as adjusting a stiff multipoint mechanism or repairing damaged hardware, the time of day you need the visit (evenings, weekends and bank holidays carry a different call-out charge to standard daytime hours), and your location within our service area. We confirm the exact price on the phone before we send anyone out, so you know the full figure before you agree to anything. There are no hidden extras added on arrival.
Do you offer a 24-hour service for snapped locks, or only during business hours?
We operate around the clock, every day of the year — there are no business hours as such. If you arrive home at midnight to find your euro cylinder has been snapped, or if a lock fails early on a Sunday morning, you can call 020 7871 7826 and a trained, insured technician will be sent to you straight away. We cover Finsbury Park and the surrounding area continuously, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays, because lock failures rarely happen at a convenient time.
