Keys That Won't Turn: Stiff and Jammed Lock Repair
A lock that has started to stick rarely fails overnight. Usually there are warning signs — you have to jiggle the key, lift the handle hard on a uPVC door, or lean your shoulder against the door to get the bolt to throw. In Finsbury Park's older housing stock, wooden doors swell with damp in winter and drop on their hinges over time, which pushes the mortice bolt out of line with the keep plate so the key will not turn cleanly. We diagnose whether the fault is the lock itself, the cylinder, or the door's alignment, and we fix the actual cause rather than just forcing it.
On uPVC and composite doors the common culprit is a worn multipoint gearbox or a cylinder that is binding. If you are turning the key and nothing engages, stop before the key snaps in the barrel — that turns a quick job into a longer one. Our mobile team carries replacement cylinders, gearboxes and mortice cases for the patterns most common across N4 and nearby postcode districts, so in many cases we repair or replace on the first visit without leaving your door open to the street.
Where a lock can be saved we service and realign it; where it is genuinely worn out we recommend a straightforward lock change service and explain why. We never upsell parts you do not need, and we talk you through the choice between repair and replacement so you can decide. If you are locked out London side of a stuck mechanism, we also prioritise damage-free entry wherever the lock allows it.
